The London Borough of Lambeth recently launched a major urban regeneration programme in a bid to improve the quality of life for its residents in the south east of the city. Working closely with the local community, Lambeth Council developed a visionary plan to rejuvenate the two and a half kilometer stretch of Wandsworth Road into a major pedestrian scheme. Like many areas of London, below ground, Lambeth is littered with both live and abandoned services, some dating back to Victorian times. Disruption of these electricity, gas and other essential services can be a serious risk to health and expensive for the construction team in terms of both lost time and potential litigation, if services are lost or individuals injured in the course of the project. In the absence of reliable information about the current locations and conditions of vital infrastructure services, the council were understandably keen to gain a clear picture of what lay beneath the pavements before a single paving stone was lifted. | Lambeth County Council appointed Adien to complete an on-site survey. Within weeks, Adien provided accurate data, identifying and locating buried services and infrastructures that may disrupt digging and prove costly in terms of time once the project had begun. David Hewitt, project manager at Lambeth Council, said; “Not only has Adien’s vital survey findings helped with the regeneration planning process by ensuring that plans comply with Construction Design and Management regulations, they have also proven cost effective and have provided a far safer working environment for staff. Adien’s work has meant that both the contractor’s staff and project management team know exactly where they are working – with no nasty surprises!” |
