As part of Thames Water’s ongoing maintenance programme, the company has upgraded and redeveloped its Hampton Water Treatment Works (WTW) site in Sunbury. Thames Water controls a staggering 32,000km of water mains throughout London and the Thames Valley. With some of the oldest pipes in the UK, it is vital that the company constantly maintains its water network. The Hampton WTW site has suffered over the years from inaccurate development records and the exact locations of buried service infrastructures could not be confi rmed. Lack of relevant statistics presented two major problems for Thames Water; the site would remain “live” throughout redevelopment, which could be a major hazard if a water pipe was to burst; and potential risk of environmental contamination would be costly. | Adien was appointed to carry out underground utility detection and mapping of the WTW site. Adien conducted a large-scale radar survey of buried infrastructure and was clearly able to identify direction and depth of all services. Nigel Heeler, project manager, said; “Adien’s findings were of great use to Thames Water, accurately identifying all services from control cables to sewerage pipes. These results ensured that no unnecessary surprises or time was wasted during the construction process. We found the Adien staff to be very helpful and pleasant to work with.” Adien’s fast turnaround results enabled Thames Water to pre-plan for pipe shutdowns and avoid any damage or disruption of the water network. |
